Hatchin up the flavor

I couldn't believe it the other day when we walked into our local Fred Meyer (kinda like a nicer super Walmart) and found bone fide Hatch green chili. Unfortunately there wasn't a roaster waiting outside to get it all good for us.
Online I found a suggestion to roast it in a dry cast-iron skillet. Didn't work too well. I also tried on the open flame of the gas stove. Worked ok, but they certainly weren't as soft as real-roasted! I guess we will just have to wait for my mom to come visit and restock us with frozen-fresh roasted Hatch green chili.
Funny thing is I never liked the stuff growing up. Sing it with me now. . . Don't know what you've got til it's gone.

7 people are laughing with me:

Did you try in the oven like I suggested? I heard to put it on a broiler pan and have at it.

Fun times. I would have been super excited making that find. Green chile is a big reason I'd never want to leave New Mexico.

Excellent food photography, my SIL.

If you put some oil in a pan you can sort of like fry it and the skin will be easier to take off, however be careful because it (oil) jumps. Already have 6 or 8 packets with 6 or 8 chiles per pack. can take more. I think you can also wrap them in a wet paper towel and nuke them.

I totally miss that smell!! I have found that our local grocery store carries fresh and roasted Hatch green chiles in the fall - I was floored to walk in and smell them! When I went to the checkout with them, the clerk looked a them for a long time - had no idea what they were!

You can also do it on a grill. You need to put tin foil on the grill. Put the chile on the foil and drop the top of the grill. let it stay closed for about 3 minute intervals.

I'm so jealous! I wish they would bring it to Chicago. When I was in college in VA, I tried to roast it on a broiler pan in the oven. It was SO much work doing that and peeling those suckers. And the roast just wasn't the same.
