new friends

In our old house we had no neighborhood friends. Now we have an 8-year-old little girl that lives next door who has rang our bell at least 5 times since we moved in. Today was the first day she actually played with the girls (all the other times were bad timing). Is the neighborhood friend thing a good thing? I like the friends from a distance thing. The type you are friends with but live further away and you have to invite them over.

I would show a picture of something. Anything. We don't know where the camera is.
All the boxes are unpacked except around 5 that are all Tug's for his office. We just got a new bookshelf so those boxes should be unpacked sometime this week. Hopefully the camera is in one of those boxes. Fingers crossed.
And, speaking of Tug, he was just awarded Specialist of the Year which is like Awesome Dude of the Year at his company. Only one person gets it per year. Hip hip hooray for him!
{l} has a gymnastics meet on Saturday. They don't normally let her level compete since she is pre-team but decided to let them do this competition. She is nervous.
Hope you all had a wonderful V-day. My sister came into town yesterday so she stayed with the kids so Tug and I could go out to dinner. Thanks for the gift certificate mom!

Hi Regina,
The neighborhood friends can be a blessing or a curse . . .

There are no neighborhood kids here and that's a blessing, most days. But sometimes my kids are lonely and I think it would be nice for them to have some neighborhood kids to play with. But not if the neighborhood kids were a bad influence.
So you see, I guess there are a lot of factors that go into this.
Good luck!
Angela

Next door neighbor friends are kinda hard to deal with, especially for those of us with large families...we've already got enough to do!! I agree with you...love em' from a distance!! It's hard to continually find an excuse, specially' if there are reasons you'd rather a particular child NOT play with your kids. Hopefully she'll be a good kind of neighbor friend....not an overly annoying one....

Good job, Tug!

Neighborhood kids need FIRM boundaries. There are some that HAVE to call before they come over and I've trained my kids to always be invited, or call and ask if they are busy before they just barge into their lives.

Awesome for Tug!

Congrats to Tug!!

Neighbors can be great. "Go play with so-and-so" means happy kids and mom can get some work done.

Neighbors can be awful. Like the time when Neighbor Girl told my kids about a party where adults only were allowed in the hot tub because they were naked. Nice. Oh, and that Santa wasn't real.

Oh, and I want to be neighbors with Laura the Crazy Mama. I won't let my kids knock on people's doors, because I HATE kids knocking on my door. I tell my kids to play outside and if their friends want to play, they'll see and come over. Phone calls are nice, too, especially if you can't see the yard.
